When can college coaches call football recruits and basketball recruits?
One of the areas that I continually here mistaken from athletic recruits of all sports is the time that college coaches can call. Some recruits think that since they didn’t get any calls from college football coaches in May, then that the coaches are not allowed to call. And while that is wishful thinking, it is definitely not true.
I will be taking a look at the permissible dates for college coaches to recruits in football, basketball, and other sports as well as the total number of calls that they can make. This is something to keep a close eye on if you are going through the recruiting process or about to go through it. The reason why I feel it is so important to know because calls from college coaches are among the highest levels of interest a college coach can show you.
Telephone Calls to Football Recruits
Division I-A and I-AA college coaches are allowed one call to student athletes (Or their relatives/guardians) made from April 15th until May 31st of the prospective athlete’s junior year in high school. Starting on September 1st of the prospective athlete’s senior year in high school, college coaches are allowed to call recruits once per week outside of a contact period. During the contact period, telephone contact is unlimited.
Telephone Calls to Men’s Basketball Recruits
Division I college coaches are allowed one call to student athletes (Or their relatives/guardians) once per month starting on June 15 of the prospective athlete’s sophomore year in high school until July 31st of the prospective athlete’s junior year in high school. College coaches are allowed to make two telephone calls per week to prospective student athletes beginning August 1st prior to the athlete’s senior year.
Telephone Calls to Athletes in Other Sports
Division I college coaches are allowed one call to student athletes (Or their relatives/guardians) once per week starting July 1st following the athlete’s completion of their junior year in high school
Application of Telephone Call Limitations
It is important to note that if a college coach calls and does not speak to anyone, that is their one call for the week or month. You can call the coach back (I assume they would give you the number to reach him or her) but that is their only chance to get in touch with you. However, if is the first time the coach is trying to call during that period and does not speak with anyone (Athlete or their parents), it does not count towards the amount of calls. Once you actually speak with the athlete, calls that are not answered do count in the future.
Other Exceptions
There are more exceptions in women’s basketball, men’s ice hockey, and women’s ice hockey that I am not going to include information about. Please refer to a college coach or your guidance counselor for more information regarding these exceptions.

I speak with parents and student athletes every day who have serious interest in playing collegiate athletics who have no idea when they can receive phone calls. The thing that really amazes me is that even when they find out they could have received a phone call months ago and did not, that they still have a good chance to play for that university. While thousands of student athletes receive phone calls on the first day permissble, 10 times that number do not. For those that do not, they either need to change their expectations or do something to let those coaches know they exist because as of that time, they do not.
