Hey, I’ve read through your site pretty thoroughly and you’ve touched on some of these things. But what about an explanation of the significance of the vertical jump, broad jump, short shuttle, and other aptitude tests (perhaps you could even brush over the 40 again) to college coaches. For instance, I understand that a nice vert may be useful for a wide receiver or corner…yet this statistic is measured for every position. Please explain these if you will
In your “Five Steps to a Scholarship” post you mention creating a player profile. I am trying to get recruited for soccer and am thinking about doing an online profile with one of the recruiting sites (www.berecruited.com, http://www.prepchamps.com, http://www.prodigy-network.com). Do these work, and how do I go about picking the best one to use? Should I pay for these?
John,
I’m just speaking to my son’s experience with football but most of these sites are worthless for getting quality attention. I would fill out one good free profile (like Takkle.com) and use it as a reference in emailing coaches, etc.
As far as effective profiles go I would do the prospect questionnaire at http://studentsportssoccer.rivals.com/ and send them game film to evaluate. Scout.com would be good too.
John,
I think Kelly is right. Use what you can that is free and forward that on to coaches.
The sites and camps that claim they forward all the information to all of the coaches may be true. But the majority of the major coaches don’t care and have other means to get the names of prospects. They don’t use giant lists that are either emailed or sent. Regardless, they end up in the trash one way or another.
