It was another eventful recruiting week. Many schools throughout the country have started holding their football and basketball camps, which means they are likely offering scholarships to top athletes. Hopefully you are among that group! Regardless, here are some ramblings on a variety of different subjects throughout the recruiting world.
Natural disasters and recruiting camps
With the tornadoes and floods hammering the Midwest this spring, one thing that you don’t think much about being affected is summer camps. At last count, the University of Iowa has made a change and will be postponing all of their camps at this point. The problem with their Elite Basketball Camp is the fact that with July being an important AAU month, that may just end up being canceled. The football camps can be moved to late June or July but some prospects that had hoped to attend may actually not be able to make it. In the end, that really does hurt their recruiting. I am not sure about what happened at Kansas State but their campus was hit hard by a tornado. That may have changed some things with camps as well.
Football recruiting becoming a world wide thing
Mark Schlabach of ESPN recently had an article talking about football prospects from Europe hoping that college coaches will give them a chance to play college football (Click here for the article). For those American football recruits out there, as if there was not enough competition throughout the country for those scholarships. Now colleges may be taking a serious look at football players across the world. The good news is that because American football has not become a world wide sport for the most part, it is not going to be like basketball recruiting.
No changes to football signing day, yet
Just to make sure everyone understands a recent article that I wrote, there are no official changes to football signing day. Things appear as if coaches may start making more of a push to get another Signing Day in November or December but at this point, that is not in stone. The NCAA will need to really buy into it for it to really happen.
