A major problem that I have with recruiting services

Posted by admin | September 3, 2009 .

A major problem that I have with recruiting servicesLet me state a few things before I go into this article.  I have never worked at a recruiting service and don’t plan to.  The reason I say that is because I am not bitter about them and thus trying to rip on the people that work for them.  Many of these same people actually subscribe to the RSS feed and check out this site daily.  Some of these companies do solid jobs and others do not.  Like all industries, there are going to be good and bad apples.

I have always said since day one of starting this site that if families actually put the time and effort into it, they can save thousands of dollars by doing it themselves.  Yes, there will be a major time commitment but I feel this is a great time to build the relationship with your son/daughter even more while going to bat with them.  So anyways, I obviously am against recruiting services overall if families have the time to invest into it.  But something made me extremely sick to my stomach that I saw on a recruiting service website recently that must be talked about.

I am not going to say the recruiting service, the website, or exactly what I saw.  But I can describe it.  I really wish I wouldn’t have seen it and I really wish they wouldn’t have posted it.  What I saw was complete B.S. and it makes me even more against recruiting services.

Anyways, one recruiting service website was talking about being how only a certain number of athletes are highlighted by this renowned recruiting expert.  And if they wanted to get listed next year, they should either take their chances going about it by themselves or they should sign up for their recruiting service.  I am calling complete bullshit on this.  This I believe is the first time I have cussed on this site but it must be emphasized.

This is the epitome of why I dislike recruiting services.  They are promising something that they have very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very little control over.  I have known many of the athletes who have been honored over the years.  I am sure there are some but most of these athletes are freaks.  They don’t need a recruiting service to highlight them.  All they need is a full game tape to send out and scholarships will come by the handful.

Other recruiting services will make other promises about how they can get you listed by Rivals, Scout, ESPN, and other sites.  If you have been reading this site, you will have realized that it is actually pretty easy to go about your business and get listed by all three of these recruiting databases.

I understand that in order for recruiting services to make money, they must do an excellent job selling their product.  They must be salespeople whenever they talk to families about all that they provide.  But it is these over promises that kill me.  Not all that many families have an extra thousand dollars laying around (and many times it will be much more) so it takes a lot for them to spend this on something that they can do themselves.  But when they are being promised stuff (like being listed by this prestigious expert), it just isn’t right.

Anyways, I am sure we will have those that work/run a recruiting service reading this so feel free to tell me what you think about this post.

Please don’t condemn all recruiting services – not all of us are bad. You tend to cast negative shadows on all. My families are extremely pleased with my services. “Do-it-yourself” systems and/or books don’t work for a lot of families – some need much more. That’s why we are in business. I am proud of my agency…I serve with integrity and provide one of the best values out there. I am sure there are other agencies that feel the same way. And on a side note, I do not think it was necessary to use profanity in your post…you got your point across fine without it. And just so you know too, “Anyways” is not a word. I do find your website helpful and it is a good resource for families.

    Thank you!

The recruiting services really help us DIII coaches, but then parents expect us to give them money, which of course is against the rules.

Although my sons are a few years out from the recruiting process, I think that I have a solid grasp on what it takes. I credit much of this knowledge to this site and a few books that I have read on the subject. Dion Wheeler puts out pretty good books on the step by step process and that really helped. I really enjoy the no BS approach to your updates. Also, I don’t normally use profanity, but is does emphasize a point. I’m sure these HS Athletes have never heard profanity on the playing field. “Anyways!”, thank you for the information and keep up the good work L.

I know first hand exactly what you are talking about. I am a parent and is in the process of trying to get my $1495.00 back from National Collegiate Scouting Associations (NCSA). My son has been a member for 5 months and it sucks. They are currently not willing to give me a refund. They are very misleading on their product and the service. High pressure sales too suck families in are awful. What I paid $1495.00 for I can get the information free from your website. Every time I see the letters NCSA it feels like I have just been sucker punched. I also have a complaint in to BBB. Any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Coach Edmond,
I love Division III athletics but if a family is paying thousands of dollars for a recruiting service, then they think they are better than Division III. I personally believe that any coach at the scholarship level does not care what their mass mail outs say. I know a Division I basketball coach who just throws away the mail outs because if the kids are good enough, he will find them. The whole recruiting service game is great for those that run it. But for families, it is a waste of money.

I do work for a recruiting service, but I do agree with just about 100%. There are good and bad apples in every industry, this one included, but we’re not all bad. CPOTX is one of very few, if not the only, recruiting service that has a store front office location available to families 6 days per week and 7 days if someone requires it. I do not know of another recruiting service that ASSISTS about 125 student athletes from each graduating class in the same city/area. And as you pointed out, most services promise this, promise that, claim to be experts, promise to get you hooked up with Rivals.com, etc, but do none of them. I have personal relationships with numerous college coaches, that do respect my opinion, BUT it is ultimately the college coaches decision not the recruiting service. I believe our one on one, personal hands on approach and our up front, straight-forward attitude are big reasons why we have been so successful and have helped over 1,600 athletes dating back to 1997.

You may feel recruiting services are a waste of money because parents and athletes can do it all themselves. Well sure they can if they have the knowledge, time, and resources. People can also prepare their own taxes, paint their own house, cut their own grass, change their own oil, wash their own car, you get my point. It’s free enterprise and everyone has the right to make a living, but I do know numerous recruiting services that over promise to get the families money. That’s not how we operate and if you could sit in a few appointments in our STORE FRONT OFFICE, I think you would be impressed.
